As the global pandemic of COVID19 unfolds, with millions effected and hundreds of thousands succumbing to this disease, there is a relentless drive to quickly discover newer and safer ways to manage the problem. Unlike the beaten track where most researcher or companies have focused on boosting host immune response as an option to address the COVID19 disease, we have chosen to take a different track and have looked for anti-viral activity as the basis to address this challenge. Initially, we short listed several herbal ingredients and other food supplements (e.g. Zinc) reported in literature to exhibit anti-viral properties, more specifically inhibiting critical viral enzyme RNA-Dependent-RNA-Polymerase (RdRp), which is responsible for its replication. Mechanism of Action
1. Direct Antiviral Activity:
- Viral Entry Inhibition: ZnNPs can interfere with the ability of viruses to attach to and penetrate host cells, preventing the initial step of infection.
- Viral Replication Inhibition: Zinc ions can disrupt viral RNA polymerase activity, an enzyme crucial for viral replication. This interference can halt the synthesis of viral RNA, thereby inhibiting virus multiplication.
2. Immune System Modulation:
- Immune Enhancement: Zinc is known to boost the immune system, enhancing the body’s ability to fight off infections. It can stimulate the production and activity of various immune cells, including T-cells and macrophages.

3. Oxidative Stress Induction:

This provided us preliminary opportunity to study the value of the shortlisted ingredients. In the initial experiments we tested varying doses of Zinc to determine the optimal concentration of the same to show anti-viral property and then combined this conc. with varying herbal ingredients to have a potent anti-viral activity. In these studies, we were able to shortlist the most potent combination of the herbal composition with zinc supplementation. - We have achieved the goal of increase intracellular Zinc concentration by different technologies as EGCG & Quercetin Phytosome delivery mechanism to facilitate Zinc inside the cells as well as increase absorption of Zinc by cells using Zinc nanoparticle.
- EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate) is found in green tea, Quercetin is found in grape seed which are proven Zinc Ionophore and shows exactly same activity as Chloroquine / Hydroxychloroquine.
- EGCG and Quercetin are not absorbed by our body effectively. We have embeded these actives with plant lecithin based Phytosomes for better absorption.
